Betty M (McDonald) Bates

June 19, 1932 ~ January 13, 2022 (age 89)


Betty Bates was born June 19, 1932 in Hobbs Island, Alabama to Ray and Ellen Taylor McDonald. She was the oldest of six children; James Ed McDonald, Joyce Barnes, Alice Jones, Laura Eubanks, and Gail Hill. 

Betty married John D. Bates shortly before he was deployed during the Korean War. She was a devoted Army wife who followed John for 29 years of his service all over the world. After retirement Betty and John returned to Hobbs Island, Alabama where they were very active in their church Ebenezer Presbyterian. During this time Betty continued to work for the government at Redstone Arsenal. John and Betty were very devoted Christians who joined Gideons International, Huntsville South Camp and served for many years. Betty loved working with the Gideons, being active in her church cooking for her family, shopping, and traveling with her friends.

In 2007 they moved to Huntsville and became members of Southwood Presbyterian Church until their final move to heaven.

Betty is survived by her son, David A. Bates (Pat); sister, Gail Hill (Larry); three nephews: Lynn McWhorter (Patsy), Bobby Webster (Kim) and Kevin Hill (Melanie); four nieces: Ann Burrow, Kim Hill, Regina Newman (Eric), and Lois Keel (Randy); Granddaughter, Megan Rich (Scott) and Grandson, Nikolas Bates (Val); and three great grandchildren, Michael, Clara, and Kristabelle.

Services for Betty will be held on Friday, January 21st, Southwood Presbyterian Church in Jones Valley, 11am-1 pm visitation, Funeral Service at 1 pm; Graveside service at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
