Janet Turney Obituary

Janet Eleanor Bowman Turney was born February 28, 1937, to the late Irvilla Marjorie Damon and Harrison Eugene Bowman of New Bedford, Massachusetts. Janet graduated from New Bedford High School and began working for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. She continued to work for various insurance companies throughout her life, always gaining new skills and expertise. She married John Robert Turney on September 19, 1959, after he proposed just before deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, while on assignment with the Navy.

They welcome four children, born in three states, as the family made several moves for John's career in the aerospace industry. Eventually settling in Huntsville, AL, Janet was a devoted mother, cheering at many youth sporting events and gymnastics meets, all the while running the "mom taxi" for four young children. She also worked for Automatic Electric in Huntsville, assembling telephones.

Janet loved holidays, especially Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, and Fourth of July. She and John hosted many family gatherings, and birthdays were always commemorated with a card, gift, and favorite desert. When grandchildren came along, Janet delighted in rocking babies, playing games, having tea parties, shopping for clothes and toys, being present for sporting/dance/acting events, and always making birthdays special.

John and Janet enjoyed travelling in the 1990's, with trips to Destin, Hilton Head, Mexico, Orlando, and the Hawaiian Islands (visiting three times). Janet was a wonderful cook and enjoyed pursueing her numerous cookbooks for a new recipe to try. She particularly loved baking - her Tomato Soup Cake, Carrot Cake and Four-Tier Delight earned high praise. She was also an excellent seamstress, and loved animals, especially dogs. She was a whiz with word search puzzles, sometimes completing 6-8 puzzles a night.

Janet lost her husband John in 2003 and was also proceeded in death by her parents, brother Donald Eugene Bowman, and sister Shirley Estelle Bowman Tria (Angelo). Janet is survived by her children James Patrick Turney and his wife Elizabeth of Huntsville, AL., Janis Elizabeth Turney Groll of Freeland, MI., John Michael Turney (Stephanie) of Huntsville, AL., and Joesph William Turney of Huntsville, AL.; Grandchildren Rebecca Lauren Groll of Bay City, MI., Senior Airmen Ryan Michael Groll of Ellsworth AFB, SD. (Currently TDY in Guam), Grace Belew Turney of Auburn, AL., and John Robert Houston Turney of Cleveland, MS., as well as one niece, Joanne Mecke of Marion, MA.
