Mary Janice "Jan" Newell, a beacon of love and family devotion, passed away at the age of 76 on February 4, 2024, at the NHC Nursing Home in Moulton, Alabama. Born on December 11, 1947, in Decatur, Alabama to James T. Coulter and Mary Irene Brooks Coulter, Jan was a cherished member of the community who touched the lives of all who knew her.
Jan's early years in Decatur were filled with the warmth of southern hospitality and the strong bonds of community. Her infectious smile and caring nature were evident from a young age. She carried these traits with her throughout her life, creating a home filled with love and open arms for friends and family alike.
Jan's life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her family. She is survived by her loving sons, Robert "Rob" Scott and Samuel Scott, who were the pride and joy of her life. Her legacy of love continues through them and the memories they shared. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, David M. Scott and James Thaxton Newell, and her son, Chris Scott. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and she kept their memories alive with fondness and reverence.
Known for her loving nature, Jan had the rare ability to make everyone feel like they were the most important person in the room. Her kindness and compassion extended beyond her immediate family to the many friends and acquaintances she made over the years. She was a pillar of her community, always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.
As we remember Jan, we reflect on a life well-lived—a life filled with laughter, generosity, and an abundance of love. She was a remarkable woman who faced life's challenges with grace and emerged with a spirit that inspired all who knew her. Jan's influence and the values she instilled in her family will continue to resonate for generations to come.
Jan's life will be celebrated in a private ceremony, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory. Her spirit will be carried forward in the stories shared, the lessons she taught, and the love she gave freely. She leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished and a void that can never be filled.
In her passing, we bid farewell to a treasured soul. Jan's journey on earth has ended, but her light remains, guiding us with the wisdom and warmth she imparted. Rest in peace, dear Jan, knowing you were deeply loved and your memory will forever be a blessing to us all.
