Tom was born in Charleroi, PA on September 11, 1943, the eldest of three children born to Thomas Merle Smiley and Marjorie (Wallace) Smiley,
In his youth, Tom enjoyed tap dancing, model trains, playing the French horn, and acting in high school plays. Around age 7 he discovered all things flying -- especially model airplanes - and thus, a lifelong passion was born. Any free time in his youth was spent building and flying free flight and Control Line model planes competitively and for enjoyment, and when Radio Control planes became more available in the 60's, he added this part of model aviation to his hobby, continuing to fly models into the later years of his life. He also acquired a private pilot's license while in college.
Tom graduated Valedictorian of his high school class and earned a full scholarship to General Motors Institute in Flint, MI for electrical engineering. While finishing college, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life second only to God - Nancy Lee Ball - on June 6, 1964. They had been together since she was 15 and he was 16, and she had played being Mrs. Smiley at age 7 - they are a true love story!
After graduation in May 1965, they moved to Dayton, OH where their daughters, Jennifer Lee and Linda Lee were born. In August 1969, the family moved to Blaine, MN, where their son, Thomas Arthur was born. Tom, Nancy, and son Tom all moved to Huntsville, AL in March 1990, where they have since resided.
God and His way of life have been preeminent in Tom's life since God started calling him in 1963. Nancy was also called by God through him, and together they were baptized into God's church February 28, 1971. In 1992 they were ordained as Deacon and Deconess, and helped serve the needs of the church brethren in any way they could. Together, they strived to fulfill Deuteronomy 6:7 and diligently lived, raised and instructed their children in God's way of life, and they have a spiritual legacy because of it.
Tom is survived by his beloved wife of almost 58 years - Nancy Smiley, of Huntsville, AL; children, Jennifer (Trent) Pulis, Rapid City, S.D., Linda Conner, Huntsville, AL, Tom (Michelle) Smiley, Huntsville, AL; siblings Deborah (William) Consavage, Chaleroi, PA; Gregory (Susan) Smiley, Bentleyville, PA; 13 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, with number 5 on the way.
